A Rewarding Job
A Reading Comprehension Passage by Common Core Texts

Some people enter politics out a desire for wealth or fame, but I like to think that my motivations were a bit less selfish. I genuinely wanted to help my community. It began with the fight over the library. Due to budget cuts, the town council had voted to close the library on Thursdays and Fridays in order to save money. I felt that this was unacceptable; the community depended on the library as a place to read, study, meet, and socialize. I got involved in the campaign to keep the library open, and after we succeeded, people started to encourage me to run for office. After much thought, I finally decided to throw my hat into the ring. I announced that I was running for town council in June of last year.

Eighteen months later, I’ve found that serving in local government is both more challenging and more rewarding than I had ever expected. Some voters expect me to do the impossible, and a lot of my job involves simply explaining to the voters what I can and cannot hope to accomplish. This can often be frustrating and tedious. On the other hand, I have never before felt so useful and appreciated. While I can’t achieve the impossible, there is a lot that I am able to accomplish. Little by little, I’ve helped to make my town a better place to live, and the grateful letters that I receive from voters show me that people notice my hard work.
