Drone Builders
A Reading Comprehension Passage by Common Core Texts

Remote control flying vehicles, commonly called “drones,” are not a new invention. However, their popularity has exploded in recent years. This is mostly due to improvements in battery technology. Drones run on battery power. Today’s batteries are smaller, cheaper, and store more power than batteries of the past. This means that today’s drones are cheaper to buy and can fly for much longer without needing to be recharged.

It is now possible to buy a drone for $20 or less at any toy store. But the real fun lies in making your own drone. It is easy and inexpensive to buy parts. Thousands of videos and other online resources explain the drone building process in detail. With only a small amount of money and an internet connection, anyone can build a drone.

But drone-building is more than just a hobby. For some, it has become a career. Large drones with cameras attached are now being used to film movies. Firefighting drones patrol forests in search of blazes. Special emergency drones are being developed to provide emergency cell phone service during natural disasters. Behind each of these new drone technologies is a team of engineers, computer programmers, and other drone specialists.

So consider taking up drone building. It is a fun and challenging hobby. Your hobby may even turn into a fascinating career someday!
